Classical guitar exams for solo and ensemble players in Singapore
The RSL Classical Guitar syllabus takes candidates from Debut to Grade 8 through Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Latin and contemporary repertoire. Each grade combines carefully chosen pieces with technical work and supporting tests so candidates develop tone, finger control, chord voicing, fluent reading and secure rhythm on a nylon-string instrument.
Early grades build independent readers who can play complete pieces with confidence. Mid-level grades develop ensemble-ready guitarists who support school guitar ensembles, community bands or chamber groups. Higher grades provide a music-career foundation with recital programmes suitable for DSA, auditions and further study.
Why RSL Classical Guitar
Focused on real solo classical guitar
RSL Classical Guitar is built around the instrument’s unique strength: carrying melody and harmony on one guitar. Grade books feature full recital pieces, not short excerpts, so candidates learn to project a line, balance chords and hold an audience, skills that transfer straight to school concerts and formal recitals.
Classical core with contemporary colour
The syllabus spans Baroque, Classical and Romantic works alongside 20th–21st century writing, Latin grooves, jazz-coloured harmony and film or pop-influenced pieces. Practice feels connected to how guitar is heard today in school CCAs, community ensembles and popular music settings, while still giving a thorough classical exam route on nylon-string guitar.
Guitar-specific technique and musicianship
Each grade balances performance pieces with scales, arpeggios, broken-chord patterns and technical studies targeting right-hand patterns, tone production, position playing and barre work. Candidates choose Sight Reading or Contemporary Improvisation & Interpretation, use quality audio and backing tracks, and develop real musicianship, not just exam technique, for solo and ensemble playing.
Recognised progression with real opportunities
RSL Classical Guitar forms part of RSL Awards’ regulated graded music exam system, with UCAS tariff points at higher grades. Results strengthen school portfolios, Singapore DSA submissions, arts-programme and scholarship auditions and university applications where sustained musical achievement is valued.
How RSL Classical Guitar exams are structured
RSL Classical Guitar graded exams from Debut to Grade 8 follow RSL’s standard structure of performance pieces, technical work and supporting tests. For full formats and options, please see Exam Overview and the syllabus specification.
